Komebukuro is a “rice bag” used to hold rice that is traditionally brought to temples in Japan as offerings during festivals and ceremonies. Today, Komebukuro bags are used to carry personal items and accessories.
The Modern Japanese Rice Pouch pattern by KZ Stevens is my FAVORITE pattern for making this kind of bag, and I’ve taught several workshops using this pattern! Make this bag in its original size and pair it with your favorite yukata at your next matsuri, or size up (per pattern instructions) and use it as a portable craft project bag.
:::KIT INCLUDES:::
- 1 copy of the Modern Japanese Rice Pouch pattern by KZ Stevens
- 2 yards of 1/2" cotton twill tape for use as drawstring handles for one bag
- Optional: Fusible woven interfacing (Pellon SF101), enough for constructing one bag
:::ABOUT THE PATTERN:::
- Difficulty level: Beginner
- Approximate finished dimensions: 6" square x 7" tall
- [NOTE: Measurements given for sizing up to 8” square.]
- This is a printed pattern, NOT a finished bag. The pattern will guide you through how to sew your own komebukuro bag.
- Recommended fabrics: medium weight linen/linen blend, cotton dobby, quilting cotton, oxford, or lightweight canvas.
